Every child a Speaker

Oracy is at the forefront of our school improvement plan. We know language development is an area of key importance for our pupils. We use this as our driving force to improve children’s active listening skills, spoken language and vocabulary which has a positive impact on all wider subjects as well as their ability to make meaningful relationships and express their emotions.

We believe that Oracy is the fundamental key to achieve success and therefore we strive to develop children’s spoken language skills through our Oracy rich curriculum, dialogic classrooms and the ethos of our staff. Oracy is embedded in all year groups and all children are exposed to talk rich environments. We aim to give children their own voice as we believe this is vital for their future success. We strive for all children to be confident to express their own opinion and ideas in a respectful and supportive environment. By the time children leave Guardian Angels’ RC Primary School, our aim is that children can speak clearly to a variety of audiences, articulate and express their thoughts and ideas effectively and conduct and participate in respectful discussions.

Every child a Reader

At Guardian Angels’ we believe that Reading is a fundamental skill which enables children to access all areas of learning, ensuring they can make progress and succeed. We aim to provide children with a literacy-rich environment, high quality texts and inspiring learning opportunities, which will help them to gain a life-long enjoyment of reading and books. Children are taught to read accurately, fluently and with understanding. Children are shown how to apply a knowledge of structured synthetic phonics in order to decode unfamiliar words with increasing accuracy and speed and how to read with expression, clarity and confidence. We develop a good linguistic knowledge of vocabulary and grammar as well as teaching children how to read and respond to a wide range of different types of texts to develop a deeper level of emotional intelligence and empathy. We encourage and support children to develop their oracy and discussion skills alongside their written and comprehension skills.

Every child a Writer

At Guardian Angels’ we believe that children will develop a love of writing through the teaching of high-quality English lessons. These lessons include introducing and deconstructing a wide variety of model texts, covering a variety of genres. Children are exposed to higher level vocabulary and have opportunities to talk about and plan their writing. We encourage and support children to develop their oracy and discussion skills alongside their written and comprehension skills. We believe that Read, Write, Inc (RWI) phonics provides the foundations of learning to make the development into fluent reading and writing easier. We are inclusive of all children, including SEND by providing the appropriate scaffolding, support and writing tools those children need in their writing process to experience success. We encourage and expect all children to take pride in their work and its presentation, including their handwriting.
